National Frequency Plan

On the 6th October 2023, the MCA published the latest edition of the frequency allocation plan for Malta - National Frequency Plan, edition 6.4 (MCA/O/18-3129/R.4) which superseded edition 6.3 (MCA/O/18-3129/R.3).  The key developments of the revised National Frequency Plan included the designation of radio spectrum for specific radiocommunication services in accordance with the Commission Implementing Decisions listed below:

  • Commission Implementing Decisions (EU) 2022/2324 of 23 November 2022 amending Decision 2008/294/EC, to include additional access technologies and measures for the operation of mobile communications services on aircraft (MCA services) in the Union;
  • Commission Implementing Decisions (EU) 2022/2307 of 23 November 2022 amending Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/179 as regards designating and making available the 5150-5250MHz, 5250-5350MHz and 5470-5725MHz frequency bands in accordance with the technical conditions set out in the Annex;
  • Commission Implementing Decisions (EU) 2022/180 of 8 February 2022 amending Decision 2006/771/EC as regards the update of harmonised technical conditions in the area of radio spectrum use for short-range devices;
  • Commission Implementing Decisions (EU) 2022/172 of 7 February 2022 amending Implementing Decision (EU) 2018/1538 on the harmonisation of radio spectrum for use by short-range devices within the 874-876 and 915-921 MHz frequency bands; and
  • Commission Implementing Decisions (EU) 2022/172 of 7 February 2022 on the harmonisation of the 900 MHz and 1 800MHz frequency bands for terrestrial systems capable of providing electronic communications services in the Union and repealing Decision 2009/766/EC.

The revised edition of the National Frequency Plan has also updated the references to certain regulatory instruments, in particular those concerning the apparatus general authorisation framework.
